What is Guthani work?
In the jewelry-making industry, you come across various techniques and colloquial terms; one is called Guthani. This is an art form that very few people practice. This technique involves building layers of pearls into a necklace using simple tools like needles and cotton thread.
The Process
When an individual looks at the jewelry, he may think it to be beautiful and simple, but in truth, it is a very tedious process and consumes many man-hours. This technique undergoes several steps;
The first step is sorting the pearls with the help of a strainer.
The second step is selecting the proper color and texture of Pearls; uneven shapes are discarded.
The third step is seeing whether the hole in the pearl is big enough for the needle and thread to pass; if there are no holes, they choose another piece from the sorted lot.
Then comes the final step in creating the masterpiece! The Pearls are passed through the needle, and thread and layers are created, which look like a carpet. It takes a few weeks to complete one set.
